Funded in 1997 by Francesca Lugli, Alessandra Assunta Stoppiello, and Massimo Vidale, the AIE is a non-profit organization, whose aim is to foster the development and diffusion of ethnoarchaeology in Italy and abroad. Its members have been running ethnoarchaeological research in Tunisia, Libya, Algeria, Cameroon, Nepal, Pakistan, Australia, Russia, and Mongolia. The AIE organized eight conferences so far.
